Artist’s Statement
I believe that harnessing passions in the service of one’s art increases artistic power in the resulting piece. In my case, for example, I have always loved silhouettes. I am very conscious of and informed by the landscape surrounding me. West Texas with its raw rugged landscapes and immense skies invokes a mystic response in me. My art is narrative. I see this area populated with a cast of saints and assorted Biblical figures driving pick-ups and outboard motor boats, using computers or enjoying wading pools. – I also envision animals (rabbits, bison, wolves) wandering the skies as spirits or prowling the land pursuing their livings on Earth… .My job is to record all this activity as fast as I can.
Occasionally (because of spending a month in China) glimpses of Chinese imagery are visible.
Materials used in my quilts are commercial fabric, hand painted fabric, resists, fiber reactive dyes, cotton/poly batting and cotton thread.
Techniques employed include the use of paper templates, hand painting using dyes and resists, machine piecing and stitching, hand stitching and appliqués.
